Democracy!

Love Track #9 Inception (Like the Movie)

What seems like 3 years ago, but was actually only about three months ago, I joined the UCLA Alumni Network on LinkedIn. No, I am not an alumnae. No, I have not yet graduated from college. And no, I do not go to UCLA.

But I had to look almost everywhere for sources for my final feature story for my Core 9 Feature Writing Class. Feature writing is a method used by journalists to creatively present news for newspapers, magazines, websites etc. Sources in this case are the people from whom we collect insight for the story’s particular topic. When we finish interviewing sources, we later turn their insight into quotes which make our news stories come alive (just in case you wanted a mini feature writing lesson).

Anyway, I had no idea that this story would take so much time, energy and hunting down people online. I remember looking for sources from the day after my professor okayed the topic up until a few hours before the first draft was due. I know what you’re thinking. Mmm mmm. No. I didn’t wait until the last minute.

This was just a topic that was more difficult to find sources for than any other. Journalism majors can relate (Feel free to share your most interesting, down to the wire, interviewing experiences below. By your second semester, you should have had at least one. If not, it’s coming.)

After much prayer, asking for help from older friends and twatching. I finally found three people who were willing to share a small part of their lives with me. After a few more emails and phone calls, I was also able to secure the expert opinion of two professionals with expert knowledge on the subject.

You’ll want to follow these next few paragraphs very closely, this blog post is kind of like two stories in one, or more like four stories in one. It’s like this movie I fell in love with when I was in 10^th Grade, Inception (kind of).

Love Track #8 Your Body is a Temple

It was around 3 in the morning as I gripped my number 2 pencil, settled on the moss green common room couch, and leaned in to 85 pages of unedited goodness. As I began to read through the soon to be published book, one specific line screamed at me. I don’t remember what it said (it was 3 a.m. give me a break). But I can give you a paraphrased version.

The line basically explained the importance of eating right and getting rest. Right after I read that I looked at the Starbuck’s iced frappuccino on my right and the Cheetos on my left and thought, something has got to change. I had been staying up that late for a while, and often times I still do. My body has gotten used to it. I mean who needs more than 4-5 hours of sleep a night anyway, right?

Love Track#7: How to Change for the Better (Hint: It begins with ‘W’ and it’s not wait!)

Not too long ago, before my very eyes, a few words of advice came alive in my life.

The words of advice were gifted to me during a conversation with a mentor of mine. She told me something that has helped me to this day.

This mentor was very instrumental in teaching me about Christ all throughout my youth, and even today as an adult.

The words of advice are very sacred to me, but I firmly believe that they can build self-love, so I’ll share them.

The words were, once you get older you start to see things in yourself that you make a personal goal to “work on” or better.

It seems like a simple concept, and it is. But the most amazing thing about it is that it can break down so many stifling complexities that we have in our lives.

There are many not-widely-known secrets to maturity and growth. What I told you was just one of them (Shhhhhh). Some, you’ll discover through people who are kindhearted enough to tell you, and others, you’ll just have to learn on your own.

Please don’t let these words go in one ear, and out the other. Even if you do, I think that at some point they’ll come flying right back into you, deeper than an epiphany, more like a spiritual understanding.

To the introverts and shy, don’t let labels given to you by someone else or yourself define you. Look for your identity in Christ and then write your own definition beside your name in the dictionary, and put your own favorite selfie there. That’s not exactly how dictionary’s work, but you know what, make your own dictionary too!

As for me, I’m still working on things. It’s a never ending cycle.

Hey Guys!

My name is Monet A. Stevens, and I am not hiding anymore. I started this blog back in 2013 to empower introverts to love their unique personalities and encourage them in a world that praises extroversion. After a long break, I have decided to return with the beautifully crafted lessons God has taught me since then and the stronger and wiser mindset that He has given me. This year, and for the rest of my life, I hope to walk further in my purpose and fulfill my personal and professional passion to build and strengthen individuals and communities through mass communication.
